The Samaritans – Suicide Statistics Report 2016

The Samaritans, who are always supportive and in attendance at our SOS events, are the only agency to collate suicide data and produce a report from the information collected.

The link at the end of this article takes you to a summary of key report findings, with options to read the reports in full.

Their 2016 report covers facts and figures for 2014.

Over the past few months, there has been much publicity and comment around the high rate of suicides amongst young men, yet the highest suicide rate in the UK in 2014 was in middle aged men between 45 and 49; interestingly, female suicide rates in England are at their highest since 2005 and at their highest in the UK since 2011.

According to the Samaritans, there were 6580 suicides in the UK and ROI in 2014.  Stop and think just how many people were actually affected by each one of those suicides. Mothers, fathers, husband, wives, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters, grand-parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and colleagues.  Each one faced with a silence.  Each one shackled through stigma.  It really is ‘time to stop the silence’

Thanks to the Samaritans for the amazing service they provide to the vulnerable.
